Custom-Built “Boondock Saints”-Themed Motorcycle Reveal —
October 20, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA – On Thursday, October 13, 2011, “The Boondock Saints” (www.boondocksaints.com) Writer/Director, Troy Duffy, hosted a bevy of the movies’ fans, friends, cast and crew, as he celebrated the reveal of his brand new, “LA Speed Shop” (www.laspeedshop.com) custom-built “Boondock-Saints”-themed motorcycle. The event, officially named “Boondock Saints Bike Reveal Benefitting Los Angeles Regional Foodbank/Feeding America”, was held at Mat Joseph’s Melrose Avenue art venue “Tuff Sissy & Co.” (www.tuffsissy.com) and his neighboring “Freak Chic Tattoo” (www.freakchictattoo.com), and benefited said local charity (www.lafoodbank.org).
“Boondock Saints” cast and crew in attendance – other than Mr. Duffy – included actress Julie Benz, actors Clifton Collins Jr., Daniel DeSanto, David Della Rocco, and Brian Mahoney, as well as additional celebs who came out to support both Mr. Duffy and the cause, actors Jack Rubio, Jonathan Schaech, Paul Alessi, Sam Macaroni, and actress Amie Barsky.
Fans of The Boondock Saints franchise had been following LA Speed Shop’s progress on-line, as owner Chris Richardson and his crew constructed Mr. Duffy’s bike. The event served as the official reveal of the completed machine. Event guests mixed and mingled, eagerly awaiting the actual bike reveal. At the conclusion of a brief announcement by Mr. Duffy, Chris Richardson pulled the cover off of the custom machine, spurring a flurry of flash photography.
The event also featured a Boondock Saints movie memorabilia auction and raffle, a portion of the proceeds of which benefitted Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. The auction included items such as an official “Boondock Saints II” movie prop painting, signed by Mr. Duffy and a number of attending cast members; clothing and accessories from the movies’ wardrobe department, actually worn on-set; and other signed memorabilia.
Inked Magazine (www.inkedmag.com) served as media partner of the October 13 event, where guests enjoyed a hosted bar courtesy of Sailor Jerry Rum (www.sailorjerry.com/the-rum), as well as the hospitality of Sailor Jerry’s fully-outfitted Airstream trailer, which was parked in front of the venue. DJ Ten Foot Rabbit (www.facebook.com/pages/Ten-Foot-Rabbit/129917050417665) entertained the crowd with intricate sound maneuvers like bits of the movies’ dialogue overlapping and intertwined in the evening’s playlist.
O.N.E. Coconut Water (www.onedrinks.com) was also on-site, as well as Magnolia Bakery cupcakes (www.magnoliabakery.com), and delightfully devoured hors d’oeuvres from soon-to-open Marcona (www.marconarestaurant.com), scheduled to open late-October, directly across Melrose Avenue from Tuff Sissy & Co./Freak Chic Tattoo. Marcona’s menu for the evening included sample bites of their Spiced Spanish Tuna, Gyros Espana, and Burlington Red Onion sandwiches, as well as their Ossi de Morti (almond cookies), Cowboy Oatmeal Cookies, and Spiced Marconas (signature bar nut mix).

Mat Joseph’s pioneering spirit has kept him on the forefront of the piercing, tattoo and art worlds. Joseph started piercing in 1987, and first entered the Melrose community in 1992, when he became the first piercer on the street. I don’t know if many of you have seen the recent video that Troy posted about the trip he and Angela took to the LA Regional Food Bank. That, along with Ali’s recent post, “Make a Difference”, gave me an idea- What if the Betties got together and raised some money to donate to the LA Regional Food Bank? Troy and Angela’s goal is to reach $10,000.00. Now, I don’t expect us to raise that kind of money, but every little bit helps. For every $1 donated to the Food Bank, $5 worth of food is distributed. Just think what the Betties could do! Let me stress this is NOT mandatory, just an idea for us, as a group, to help give back and to help Troy and Angela, who are pretty kick ass people! Now my idea was to pool the money together and make one donation in the Betties name. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that and would still like to participate, please feel free to make your own donation. Around this time of year there is the opportunity to participate in many Secret Santas through many different communities be it work, friends, or even online. I apologize for not jumping on this and arranging one for us.
Instead, my plea is a simple one. Give back to your community.
There are many soup kitchens in every town and the volume of people going around without hits harder. I think it’s empathy I feel when we step outside before finding respite in another heated place and see someone shivering on the street. Think of those that DON’T have a home to go to. Though I don’t suggest bringing a homeless person home, see what you can do in your community to help out your fellow man.
Nursing Homes have a tendency to make people anxious. Going in for a few hours and playing games and talking to some of the residents is very much appreciated. During the winter, when people are spending more time together, many nursing home residents have few visitors. It’s not just something you can do for them. Getting to know someone who was raised in a different time that is full of life experience and advice also benefits you.
A food bank’s shelves are ransacked this time of year. I can speak from personal experience. Many times I buy things because they’re on sale and they are never used. I have a bunch of crap that I have no desire to ever use. I probably once intended on them being used for something, but since I’m no longer eating the same amounts that I once was, it sits there forgotten.
Cabinet space is something I always find myself lacking, so the idea of hoarding all of this food I will most likely never use is ridiculous when someone else can use it.
There are many food banks that run auctions around this time of year where they have some pretty amazing prizes. Winning one of them is not only enviable, it is going towards and amazing cause. I’m sure there are others, but the one I’m nerding out about most is the Auctions for the L.A. Food Bank. Were I on the West Coast, I would be bidding to be on Doug Benson’s “I Love Movies” podcast or Chris Hardwick, Matt Mira and Jonah Ray’s “Nerdist” podcast. Actually, if they offer to skype me in I will probably join into the fray. I mean… You can even bid on a PRIVATE tour of PIXAR Animation Studios!
I know that purses are tight now, but think about it. A Secret Santa price ranges from about $10-25 considering what you are able to do. Since we’re not doing a Secret Santa, please think about throwing ten dollars to one of the following charities.
* Any Program Against Domestic Abuse:
Many people are survivors of varying forms of abuse. I have seen pictures from the people I have grown to care deeply for that were taken after a harrowing experience. Their bodies – battered and bruised. Their homes, destroyed. Please locate a local chapter and give what you can.
* Any Children’s Hospital or Organization:
There are so many mothers in this group. Some new mothers, some new grandmothers. You know how fulfilling it is to see a smile on an innocent face. If you’re out shopping during this crazy hectic time, grab an extra toy and donate it to Toys for Tots. Make a small contribution to a good cause for children that may have less in their life. Donate the toys that your children have grown out of (IF they are still good quality) to a local children’s hospital.
A few years ago, I worked for a video store. There was a boy that was suffering through chemo to treat his Leukemia. He loved movies so much I remember comping a lot of rentals to his parents and waving late fees. I even went to visit him and talked movies. Sadly, he passed on two weeks before his 14th birthday. His parents are still paying off the medical bills. See if there is a fund for a child in your area and take a few dollars off of their medical cost.

Thanks to Nana, this stuffing has been a Thanksgiving tradition in our family for decades. It is absolutely delicious and compliments our feast perfectly. Pretty sure most of us love it more than the turkey. In fact, it’s the reason I am not a fan of any bread stuffing (except the smoky cornbread one) – I’ve been too spoiled with this! It’s so hearty and flavorful that it could be a main dish. See for yourself…
3 lbs fresh ground pork
1 cup plain bread crumbs
1 onion, finely chopped
1 celery stalk, finely chopped
1 tablespoon of Bell’s Poultry Seasoning
3 large potatoes (mashed with butter and milk)
Preheat oven to 350.
Peel and chop potatoes then boil until fork tender. Mash with a little butter and milk. Store in refrigerator and allow to completely cool. (can be done ahead of time)
In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Mix in the cold mashed potatoes then add a few pinches of salt and some freshly ground black pepper.
This is the type of soup that doesn’t really have any set measurements or ingredients. Aside from the aromatics like onions, garlic, and celery that should be included in this recipe, it’s a “throw in any kind of veggies you like” soup especially if you are cleaning out your fridge/freezer. These just happen to be the veggies I ended up using. You can make this completely vegetarian by using vegetable stock instead of a meat-based stock. And it’s perfect for those cold rainy and/or snowy days when all you want to do is stay warm and cozy indoors with a blanket, roaring fire, and good book!
3 cups water
2 cups chicken or vegetable stock
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
6 celery stalks, chopped (include the leafy tops for extra flavor)
6 medium sized carrots, peeled and chopped
1 cup frozen sweet peas
1 cup frozen sweet corn
14.5oz can diced tomatoes
15.5oz can red kidney beans, drained
15.5oz can garbanzo beans, drained
1 ¼ cup uncooked brown rice
2 bay leaves
Fresh ground black pepper
In a large soup pot, cook onions in about a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until onions are translucent. Next add the can of diced tomatoes and cook for about 2 minutes. Then add the water, stock, carrots, celery, corn, bay leaves, garlic, and beans. Grind some black pepper in there and add a few pinches of salt (the stock may have some sodium in it so go easy with the salt, you can always add more later). Cover and simmer over medium low for about an hour- stirring occasionally. About 20 minutes before serving, add the rice so it cooks thoroughly (unless it’s “Minute” rice in which case, 10 min before). Then about 5 minutes before, add the sweet peas so they remain a bright green color (if added too early they turn a muted “pea soup” color). Remove bay leaves before serving. Top with a little grated parmesan cheese and serve with some warm crusty garlic bread.
For the garlic bread, toast a few slices of whole wheat Tuscan bread (Trader Joe’s has an amazing one) with a little butter. Once toast is slightly browned and still warm, rub a clove of garlic over the surface of each piece. You don’t need to use the entire clove; all you need is the flavor of the garlic. It’s so delicious and beats the heck out of *gasp* garlic powder!
This soup can last for days in the fridge and be eaten all week or you can freeze the leftovers in small containers for later use.
